Kidney Transplant Team

The kidney transplant team at UMMC is dedicated to the care of patients undergoing transplant procedures either to receive a life-saving kidney or to graciously donate one. Each individual on our transplant team plays a vital role in providing all transplant patients and families with expertise, knowledge, and understanding.

Team members

  • Transplant nephrologists
Our nephrologists specialize in disorders of the kidneys. They help determine if you are a candidate for transplant and will help manage your condition after surgery.
  • Transplant surgeons
These physicians specialize in transplants and will be performing the surgery.
  • Nurse practitioners
The nurses on our team have additional training and expertise and will help guide you through the evaluation process and post-surgical care.
  • Nurse coordinators
Our nurse coordinators will organize all aspects of care provided to you before and after the transplant. They also provide patient education and coordinate diagnostic testing and follow-up care.
  • Social workers
Social workers are here to help your family deal with many issues that may arise, including lodging, transportation, finances, and legal matters.
  • Financial coordinators
Our team includes financial experts who have extensive experience working with transplant patients. The financial coordinator will clarify the financial aspects of your transplant surgery.
  • Pharmacists
Dedicated pharmacists with extensive experience with medications for transplant patients will monitor your medications while you are in the hospital and at clinic visits.
  • Dietitians
Our team includes dietitians who help manage your nutrition before and after transplantation. The dietitian can help with any special dietary instructions or diets to manage coexisting medical complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
  • Primary care physician
Your primary care physician and primary referring nephrologist are a critical part of the transplant team. You need to maintain a relationship with your primary care physician and primary nephrologist since they will be a vital part of your general care. Your transplant specialist, nephrologist, and primary care physician will work together to provide continuing care to you following transplantation.
  • Other team members
We also have team members who will evaluate you before transplantation and make recommendations to the team. These team members include anesthesiologists, hematologists, infectious disease specialists, psychologists, and others.
